Spring is officially here and with it comes renewed hope, energy and forward momentum. Of
course, here in Puerto Rico, it feels like Spring or Summer all year round and there is always a lot of activity–recently, more than usual. With the nearly $25,000 we raised, The Palmas Community Ladies Club (PLCC) continues its effort to provide assistance to the dedicated people who work at Palmas to recover from hurricanes Irma and Maria. Cash and solar lights have been distributed to many people in need. In addition, we have utilized funds set-aside from other sources to help feed the homeless in Humacao and the surrounding area. And the PLCC has recently donated generously to Casa Ronald McDonald, El Faro, the School for the Deaf, and Casa la Bondad. Together, our members, their families and friends do all we can to help worthy causes and wonderful people in our island paradise.

The PLCC has been active for more than 25 years. To be sure, the past six months have been one of the biggest challenges for all of us. Experiences have been worthwhile and varied. There are people and groups here in Palmas that have big hearts and have given of themselves in so many ways. However, the one I am going to mention now MUST be shared!

Did you know that Palmas has a resident “Angel” who chooses to remain anonymous? Are you aware that for more than 4 months, this man personally funded hot lunches and take-home meals for many of the workers here. It is not even possible to calculate how many people benefited by his kindness and generosity. Our “Angel” did this for as long as there was a commercial kitchen available to store food and do the cooking. The meals were available from September through much of February. When the project had to end, there was a tremendous amount of food that had already been purchased. The “Angel” wanted to make sure everyone got some. There was close to 1500 pounds of chicken and pork that had been frozen, as well as bags of rice and beans and seasonings, etc. The PLCC joined up with the “Angel” and repackaged all of the meat into family size portions. We then made up dinner kits including bags of rice, beans, tomato sauce and seasonings and helped to distribute them throughout Palmas. It was our privilege and pleasure to get to know this “Angel.” On behalf of the entire PDM family, muchas gracias! Abrazos! Te queremos mucho!

The Palmas Ladies Community Club is comprised of more than 50 ladies who really want to
make a difference. Energy and ideas abound. In addition to charity work, a function of the club is to help ladies who are new to Palmas del Mar make friends, get answers to their many questions, and to settle-in quickly. We are active 12 months a year and welcome new members!

NO MORE PLASTIC BAGS!
Have you heard about Law 247?
Did you know that Puerto Rico passed a law prohibiting merchants from providing plas- tic bags for purchases? The law became fully effective in June of 2017. Research has shown that an enormous number of plastic bags are used per year in Puerto Rico and only a very tiny percentage are being recycled.

The Palmas Ladies Community Club (PLCC) quickly realized that we have an opportunity to help the environment while at the same time fundraising for the charities that we support. We now ALL need reusable bags when we shop! SOooo….., the PLCC has ordered a large quantity of 3 types of very attractive bags. There are regular cloth tote bags in a variety of colors. And there are two kinds/sizes of insulated bags to protect perishable food when we grocery shop, or go for a long drive, or on a picnic, or to the beach or pool.

THIS IS A WIN-WIN SITUATION. The bags are on-hand and available for purchase here in Palmas. All profits will be donated to charity. Please e-mail or call or text Linda Guinipero to arrange to get your bags. lindag1316@yahoo.com
