Friends of the Pterocarpus Forest have joined the 2019 global #GivingTuesday movement, uniting with thousands of nonprofit organizations in Puerto Rico, the United States and around the world to promote
philanthropy. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and fueled by the power of social media and collaboration, GivingTuesday inspires millions of people across the globe to show up and give back to causes and issues that matter to them. The goal is to create a massive wave of generosity that lasts well beyond that day and touches every person on the planet. GivingTuesday takes place on December 3, 2019 this year.

The goals of the Friends of the Forest and #GivingTuesday in Puerto Rico are to make the public aware of the critical role that nonprofits like the Pterocarpus Forest, and hundreds of other Island civic institutions are playing in Puerto Rico’s environmental, social and economic revival two years after Maria — and to generate widespread community support for initiatives such as these. One of the best ways to get involved with #GivingTuesday is in our own community.

    • The Friends of the Pterocarpus Forest will be seeking your support to: Make available new, stimulating environmental education materials including a unique, bilingual Forest Tour App for Android and Apple for on-line and on-site use.
    • Continue the restoration of the Forest, which involves crafting conditions conducive to its complete recovery, including the planting of hundreds of more Pterocarpus and other trees, a continuing major priority two years after Maria.
    • Maintenance and improvements to the Forest boardwalk and rest areas, interpretative signage observation tower, visitors’ center and other facilities.

We’ll be providing the community with more details about Forest’s 2019 #GivingTuesday initiative in Live & Life in Palmas and other media. Currently, our planning includes a first-ever, exclusive “Night at the Bosque” GivingTuesday celebration, so stay alert for more news and information. #GivingTuesday was founded seven years ago by the Belfer Center for Social Innovation at the “92nd Street Y” in Manhattan. For over 140 years, the Y, as a proudly organization, has harnessed the power of arts and ideas to enrich, enlighten and change lives, and the power of community to repair the world. 1
