Palmas Academy Culinary Arts Program

The Palmas Academy began last year a new and innovative program called “Family & Consumers Sciences and Culinary Arts” for students from 7th to 12th grade.  Students attend this class from 7am to 10am once a week, but 11th and 12th graders are considered to be an advanced group and they attend on a daily basis. “It all started with a dream. I presented it to the head administrator of the school, she approved and I started a fundraising campaign among parents in order buy the necessary equipment.  Kids love it!! They are so exited!” said Miss Margie Pizarro the motor behind this beautiful project along with generous parents that helped her make this possible.

It’s been great because they not only learn how to cook but they learn math, measurements, and even geography when we cook dishes from other countries, so it works in many different ways. And now, with channels like Food Network, there is more awareness and a huge interest in gastronomy.

The class is very comprehensive and they have to learn about safety, sanitation, temperatures and how many degrees food needs to be cooked, like, for example, that chicken and poultry in general need to be cooked to a minimum of 165 degrees. The course is theoretical and it includes a laboratory– it’s not only about learning to cook.

As you may know, the school has, since last year, a beautiful vegetable garden that has been expanded and now is being used for the culinary classes.

Miss Pizarro has many existing plans for this year and the coming years…Live & Life in Palmas will keep you posted.  Bravo, bravisimo for Miss Pizzarro, for The Palmas Academy’s faculty and its board for supporting and encouraging programs like this one.  Once again The Palmas Academy does it better!! Keep up the good job. And definitely, one of these days I will stop by to try one of their dishes!
